An online discussion on the issue of nominating a common candidate for the upcoming presidential election was organized by the Northern and Eastern Priests and Religious Council for Justice and Peace on August 16th.
The forum was chaired by Rev. Fr. Rohan Dominic of the Claretian Congregation, the council coordinator.
The discussion aimed to reach a unified stance among priests and religious leaders on endorsing a common candidate. Tamil Civil Society Forum activist Mr. Sundareswaran presented the objectives and significance of the proposal, providing context and rationale.
Participants then engaged in a detailed discussion on the potential benefits and challenges of supporting a common candidate.
The event featured contributions from notable religious figures, including Rt. Rev. Dr. Noel Emmanuel, Bishop of Trincomalee, and Rev. Fr. Jebaratnam, Vicar General of the Jaffna Diocese, as well as priests, religious leaders, and Tamil civil society forum activists from the Northern and Eastern regions.
